A saxophone solo, evoking memories, and perhaps painting sound pictures, of lazy sunny summer seaside days, makes the new single, Did You Ever Love A Boy, by Kathleen Devine different to her debut song The Irishmen.
The young Galway-based, Chester-born singer, saxophonist and songwriter had a successful start to her recording career with her self-penned The Irishman and this is another, but more Blues sounding, original by her.
She recorded this new song in Headford, with producer Tony Maher of The Conquerors, and Athenry guitarist Enda Dempsey of the Derek Ryan band.
The video for the song was filmed at Formby Beach and National Trust Reserve, not far from her home, near Liverpool. With the expansive and beautiful beach plus dramatic sand dunes, surrounded by sweeping coastal pinewoods, this is a dramatic backdrop for the video.
The song itself has shades of Whitney Houston’s big hit I will Always Love You, written by Dolly Parton. But the sax solo in Kathleen’s song has other subtle sounds, perhaps with some similarities to Stranger on the Shore, the international hit for English clarinettist Mr Acker Bilk decades ago.
While the sentiments in the song Did You Ever Love a Boy, about unrequited love, will resonate with any girl singer, Kathleen says that the words could be changed to Did you Ever Love a Girl or even Did You Ever Love Someone depending on the singer.
Her debut song, The Irishman, got international airplays, and fans for Kathleen from Scotland to Sydney with thousands of views on various social media platforms. This song should solidify that success and pave the way for her first album which she is currently writing more songs for.
